An extraordinary 1950s strapless evening dress by Pauline Lake, designed exclusively for the legendary Royal Hawaiian Hotel in Honolulu. Crafted from luminous metallic gold and tangerine silk organza from India, the gown is richly adorned with handwoven floral embroidery in jewel tones—fuchsia, sapphire, emerald, and violet—creating a painterly garden effect that glimmers with movement.
The fitted bodice is trimmed with metallic braid along the neckline, adding definition and a touch of glamour. The full skirt is box-pleated for dramatic volume, revealing layers of airy silk that capture the light beautifully. A narrow, embroidered waistband emphasizes the nipped waistline, balancing the structured bodice with the sweeping silhouette below. Fully lined in saffron taffeta. The interior bodice is boned for structure and support. Zips up the back with original metal zipper. In good wearable condition with signs of wear and age described in condition notes.

Pauline Lake was a prominent mid-century designer in Hawaii, known for creating sophisticated and elegant fashions for the elite clientele of the Royal Hawaiian Hotel, often blending Western couture shapes with fabrics that celebrated the islands’ artistry and culture. This dress embodies the opulence of 1950s resort fashion and the allure of Waikiki’s “Pink Palace of the Pacific.”
Material: silk organza outer, taffeta lining
Condition: Good with signs of wear. Hidden breaks in the silk throughout the skirt, hard to see in the folds but worth mentioning. The fabric is inherently delicate and shows signs of wear. Minor stains in the lining, not seen when worn. Structurally very good and wears and presents beautifully. See close up pictures.
